Nepal

Nepal
is a small landlocked country nestling in the Himalayas. It is the
world's only Hindu kingdom, though the population also consists of
Buddhists. Nepal is the site of the world famous Mount Everest, the
highest mountain in the world. It is a favorite destination for
trekkers and mountaineers. For devotees all over the world, Nepal is
also the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and at the town of Lumbini, you
can see many Buddhist temples built in architectural styles ranging
from Thai to Japanese. Visit the magnificent Himalayan peaks , go
trekking through the invigorating mountain trails and find peace and
solace at the many Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas dotting all
towns and villages of Nepal. The tribal population of the mountains
will welcome you with dances and songs, and feel yourself one with
nature near the many hidden pools and waterfalls on the hill sides.
How to
Reach
Katmandu,
the capital, is well connected to the major capitals of the world
through regular air services. Many private as well as government
careers like Royal Nepal airlines, Air India, Gulf Airways, Air
Sahara, Autriair and Druk Air have regular flights to Nepal. The
India-Nepal border has many entry an exit points for those wishing
to travel by land.
Cities in Nepal
Nepal, once the Shangri La of South Asia, is now a modern country
with shopping malls, concrete buildings, hospitals, restaurants and
bustling cities. The Himalayas provide a picturesque backdrop to
most of Nepal's cities. The three cities in Kathmandu Valley-
Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are well connected to each other. The
Valley also has the largest number of UN Heritage Sites in Nepal,
including the Durbar Squares, the Pashupatinath temple and Bodhi
Stupa. Kathmandu, the capital, is a cosmopolitan city with temples
and discotheques existing side by side. Patan, on the banks of the
Bagmati, has temples with traditional Newari style pagodas. Janakpur
is believed to be the birthplace of Sita, consort of the Hindu deity
Lord Rama. Lumbini is famed as the birthplace of the Buddha, and is
the land of Buddhist stupas reflecting the architectural styles of
many Asian nations. Pokhara lies at the edge of a picturesque lake
and is famed for its natural beauty.
All the cities in Nepal have everything to offer, from ancient
stupas, old forts and palaces, temples, and the birthplace of the
Buddha. You can trek through the mountain trails, camp at the lush
hillside forests and take a dip in the cool mountain pools.
Enjoy water sports on gushing Mountain Rivers, meditate on Buddhist
monastery tours, and visit mountain hamlets on the outskirts of
Nepal cities. CELEBRITY TRAVEL SOLUTIONS packages make it feasible
for you to explore breathtaking Nepal cities in an organized
fashion. Feel the immense influence of Buddhism on Nepal and its
people on Nepal city tours
Kathmandu
Kathmandu,
the capital of Nepal, is a city of many contrasts. The older parts
of the city have majestic Buddhist and Hindu temples, small shops
and businesses, and quiet residential neighborhoods. The more
recently built additions to the city are the Los Angeles style
casinos, the many discothèques and pubs, and the Freak Street, a
remnant of the hippy days.
Hanuman Dhoka, the old royal palace at the Durbar Square, is the
remnant of the magnificent palace of the royal family of Nepal. It
was almost completely destroyed in an earthquake in the 1930s. The
intact portion of the building houses the Sri Tribhuvan Museum,
housing personal belongings of King Tribhuvan. The Bhimsen Tower is
an old watchtower, built earlier in the century. This tall minaret
like structure was damaged in an earthquake and later rebuilt. Ten
places in and around Kathmandu are now listed as UN Heritage Sites.
These include the Durbar Square, the Pashupatinath temple, revered
by the Hindus, and the Buddhist stupa at Boddhanath. The temple of
Changu Nath, with its superb architecture, also finds a place in the
list
The buzzing marketplaces of Asan Toll, set up around Nepali "chetris"
or ornamental canopies, are a must visit if you wish to buy fresh
farm produce, or interact with the locals. Asan also has a small
temple built in typical Nepali style. There are many picturesque
valleys and mountain trails just outside the city precincts.
Pokhara
Pokhara
stands on the shores of the picturesque Lake Phewa in the Pokhara
valley. The magnificent Macchapucchre Peak towers almost 7000 meters
above the sea level, and the Annapurna ranges of the Himalayas
provide a magnificent backdrop to this city. Lush forests, crystal
clear streams and magnificent mountain trails add to the beauty of
Pokhara. Once the capital of the ancient Licchavi kingdom, Pokhara
is now a quiet, serene lakeside town. Pokhara was also an important
point on the trade route between the ancient kingdoms of Tibet and
India, which ran across the mighty Himalayas. The city is also the
birthplace of the legendary Gurkha warriors, famous throughout the
world for their fierce patriotism, courage and stamina.
The mountains of Pokhara are, of course, the main attractions of the
city. The Macchapucchre Peak is so named because of its resemblance
to the tail of a fish. The Phewa Lake, at the heart of Pokhara, is a
very popular picnic spot. Boating on the Phewa is an unforgettable
experience, as you breathe in the mountain air and see the beautiful
green peaks gently sloping into the Lake. The eastern part of the
shore is crowded with shops, hotels and restaurants, and has a
lakeside walkway. An island at the center of the Lake is home to the
Barahi temple. The mysterious Devi's Falls have an eerie atmosphere
owing to the many legends associated with it. The southern shore of
the Phewa is home to the World peace Pagoda. The Annapurna Natural
History Museum exhibits many kinds of birds and insects found in the
Annapurna ranges.
Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur
is situated in the Kathmandu Valley, just half an hour's drive from
the capital Kathmandu. It is a UN Heritage Site owing to its
temples, palaces, pagodas and stupas. The people of Bhaktapur speak
Newari.
The Bhaktapur Durbar Square, in the heart of the city, consists of
two massive gates and stone carvings of the rulers of the ancient
Bhaktapur kingdom. The red and golden façade of the entire structure
points towards Chinese influence. The Golden Gate and lion Gate were
built as entrances to the magnificent Fifty-Five Windowed Palace in
the 15th century. A large gallery inside the Palace has frescoed
walls depicting Hindu and Buddhist deities and beliefs.
The Changu Narayan temple is a UN Heritage site, like the Bhaktapur
Durbar Chowk. It is famous for its stone inscriptions. Dedicated to
the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu, the temple depicts incidents from the
incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The statues of the Bodhisattva, an
earlier incarnation of the Buddha, points to the religious harmony
that existed in the ancient kingdom of Bhaktapur.
As you walk through the meandering streets of Bhaktapur, you will
come across small shops straggling in the shelter of the large
temples dominating the city. The shops sell anything from woolen
caps, scarves, and shawls to chunky jewelry and leather goods.
If you are a culture aficionado, a student of history, or a nature
lover, Bhaktapur will have something for you. A trip to this city is
like stepping back in time, and you will feel yourself taken back
through the centuries to the times of kings and warriors.
Patan
Patan
lies 5 kilometers south of Kathmandu. The city is known for its old
monuments and beautiful Buddhist pagodas and Hindu temples. The
Durbar Square and the Golden Temple are best explored in the
battery-operated taxis of Patan, which have become a landmark of
this ancient city. Visit the Mangal Bazaar square, the City Bus Park
and Martyr's Gate. Also explore the stupas and the magnificent
temples of Patan.
The Durbar Square has fine pagodas with elaborate stone carvings of
deities and demi gods. The ancient palace complex houses elaborate
bronze and stone baths and the temples dedicated to Lord Krishna.
The Lokeshwar Pagoda was built in the 12th century by Bhaskar Verma.
The temple houses a golden statue of Lord Buddha and a large prayer
wheel with golden and red carvings. The Kumbeshwar Pagoda, dedicated
to Lord Shiva, is a unique Hindu temple built in pagoda style. The
Jagat Narayan temple is built of tall Shikhara-or "peaks" of brick.
The metallic Garuda statue on the Shikhara gleams in the sun. The
Rudra Verma is an ancient Buddhist monastery, believed to have been
built by the great Maurya king Ashoka. The monastery holds a
magnificently carved statue of the Buddha. The Macchendranath temple
is the starting point of the annual Macchendranath chariot festival,
when the statue of the deity is taken round the city in a chariot
procession.
The Tibetan colony at Patan has a large number of Tibetan refugees
who have built many shrines in a typical Tibetan style. The small
shops in the Tibetan colony sells handicrafts, prayer wheels and
jewelry, and the skilful bargainer can always pick up a copper
utensil or leather jacket at low prices.
Gorkha
The
town of Gorkha lies midway between Pokhara and Kathmandu. It is also
the home of the legendary Gorkha warriors whose knives were bound to
draw blood once they were unsheathed. The town was once the capital
of Nepal, and housed the Palace of the great King Prithvi Shah, who
united Nepal's scattered kingdoms. Apart from the Palace and
temples, Gorkha's natural beauty also makes it a favorite with
trekkers.
The Gorkha Palace lies on the top of a steep hill, and one must
climb at least 1350 steps to reach it. But the view from the summit
will be worth the climb. If the sky is cloudless and there is no
fog, you can see the Himalayas. The palace is embellished with
wooden carvings and engravings.
Trekkers can find many lovely trekking trails originating from
Gorkha. You can trek along the beautiful Gorkha-Pokhara route, or go
on daytrips to nearby Luitel and Ghatpokhari.
Gorkha celebrates the birth anniversary of Nepal's great King,
Prithvi Narayan Shah, with great pomp and festivities. The king was
the founder of the Gorkha regiment, and brought the fragmented
kingdoms of Nepal under a central rule. On the birth anniversary of
the king, the Gorkha Bazaar is decorated with silver festoons and
colorful frescoes. If you are in Gorkha during the Dashain festival
celebrations, you will see the colorful Dashain procession from the
ancient capital of Gorkha to the present capital Kathmandu. The
procession ends at the Narayanhiti Palace in Kathmandu, where the
present monarch of Nepal resides.
Tansen
Tansen
lies on the slopes of the Srinagar Danda Hill, 1300 meters above sea
level. It is the capital of Palpa district. Apart from the view of
the majestic Himalayan peaks and surrounding valleys, Tansen is also
popular tourist attraction owing to its peaceful environs and
temples. As you listen to the Hindu and Buddhist chants rising from
the ancient temples, all weariness leaves your body, and you feel
rejuvenated.
The Kali Gandaki River flows through this serene hill town, and
passes near the Ranighat Palace and Ramdi Ghat. Trekkers will find
this route very picturesque, with views of the surrounding peaks and
hidden waterfalls. The picturesque Satyawati Lake lies on the
outskirts of the town. The people are devout Buddhists, and in
almost all the narrow mazes of streets, you will come across a
temple or shrine. Life in this hill town is peaceful, and the people
are friendly and hardworking.
The Amar Narayan Temple, almost 200 years old, is a pagoda housing
ornamental woodworks and fenced by a stone wall. The temple complex
encloses ponds, springs and inns for travelers. The Tansen Durbar
complex houses a magnificent Palace, and was built in the early 20th
century. It now houses the district administration of Palpa. The
Bhagwati Temple, built two centuries back, was destroyed in the 1934
earthquake that destroyed most parts in and around Kathmandu Valley.
The Amarganj Ganesh temple is famous for its intricately carved
interiors.
Janakpur
Janakpur
is an ancient city mentioned in Indian mythology as the birthplace
of Sita, wife of the deity Lord Rama. Situated in the foothills of
the Himalayas, Janakpur is place of pilgrimage for devout Hindus.
Janakpur is to Hindu pilgrimage what Lumbini is to Buddhist
devotees. Janakpur has many temples dedicated to Lord Rama and Sita.
The lush Terai forests surrounds the town, and for a moment it is
hard to believe that this quiet pilgrimage center could once have
been the capital of the ancient kingdom of Mithila, ruled by Sita's
father.
As a major pilgrimage center, a visit to Janakpur remains incomplete
without a visit to the Ram Sita Sthal, where Ram was supposed to
have married Sita. The Ram Mandir, where devotees throng every
morning and evening, stands close to the sacred Dhanush Sagar pool.
The Sankat Mochan temple, dedicated to lord Hanuman, has the live
embodiment of Hanuman in the form of monkeys, which are fed by the
pilgrims. As you stroll htrough the narrow streets, you will come
across many sacred shrines, an indicator of the importance of
religion in the lives of the devout people, most of whom speak
Maithili, a language also spoken across the border in India.
Apart from the devout, Janakpur also welcomes those who are
interested in history and culture. Every house, however modest, has
walls painted with Mithila paintings, lovely frescoes with religious
significance. The Janakpur Women's Development Center is leading an
important role by helping women commercially market this art form,
which is mainly practiced by women.
If you are in Janakpur in December, then you should not miss the
Vibaha, or wedding, Festival of Ram and Sita. It attracts thousands
of pilgrims who throng to see the re-enactment of the wedding.
Lumbini
Lumbini
is believed to have been the birthplace of Prince Siddharth, later
known as the Buddha, or "the Enlightened One". It is the most
important pilgrimage center for Buddhists. Lumbini lies in the
foothills of the Himalayas. This ancient town has many stupas and
Buddhist temples, built by Buddhist nations from around the world.
The old structure on what is believed to be the exact spot where
Lord Buddha was born is reputed to have been put up by Emperor
Ashoka almost 2000 years ago. Close to Lumbini is Kapilavastu, where
the young Lord Siddharth grew up. At Lumbini, you will come across
vistors from China, Japan, South East Asia, India and Sri Lanka. The
confluence of many architectural influences, the school of Buddhist
studies run jointly by the governments of Nepal and Japan, lend an
international feel to the city.
The Sacred Garden at Lumbini is spread over a large area. It is home
to the Buddhist shrines built by many nations from across the world.
So you will find Chinese pagodas, Burmese steeples, and a monastery
of the International Gautami nuns. The Ashoka Pillar, located close
to the Garden, has inscriptions announcing Emperor Ashoka's edicts.
A temple dedicated to Buddha's mother is also located inside the
Sacred Gardens. The sacred Pushkarni Pond is also believed to be
related to the Buddha's birth.
The Lumbini Museum houses artifacts belonging to the Mauryan and
Kushana periods. The Kapilavastu Museum in Kapilavastu has
terracotta figurines, coins and manuscripts as old as the 7th
century BC.
